Opera

Here are some of the pictures I took of the Opera- "Orpheo ed Euredice"-- that I designed.

There were 2 Amores and 2 Euredices who alternated nights (so that is why you see 2 different girls in the same costume)

Enjoy!

We open the opera and Orpheo's wife Euredice is Dead!

He gets a magic Lyre from the Goddess Amore to open the gates of the underworld and go in and get her.

He finds her and leads her out of the caves, but can't look at her or she will dissappear.

She is upset because he won't look at her-- alas he doesn't love her anymore.

He can't look at her, and he can't tell her, or the spell will be broken.

Finally they can't stand it anylonger- they look at each other.....

and she dies!

Amore Comes back to raise her from the dead--

And they live happily ever after!!

Don't you just love a good old Greek myth??

October

October is here-- and boy do I miss Fall!! We are getting a bit colder, down in the 50's at night but we are still up in the 75degree range during the day. So no leaf peaking-- no leaves are changing!! (so here is a picture of what I wish I was seeing!!)

Football is the big thing here-- of course. There is a game this saturday with huge tailgating. I hope to stop by and see what it is all about. I have tickets for the Game on Nov. 1st against Tulane. They are up in the stratosphere but tickets are hard to come by so I got some when I could!!

School is going well, I open the Opera- "Orpheo et Euridice" on friday. I'll post pics soon.

Things Getting Better in BR

Last night, at 7:42 p.m.- 5 days 7 hours and 38 minutes after it went off-- I got Electricity!!

HURRAH!!

about 50 % of the city still is without power-- some of my fellow faculty members will need to wait WEEKS for theirs, but with much suprise and cheering, My lights, and AC are back on.

I was going to give an Homage to Thomas Edison, who I learned in School was the inventor of Electricity and the light bulb, only to learn that -

WE WERE LIED TO!!

Thomas Edison, although brilliant, didn't "Invent" electricity, or the light bulb-- but he did take other peoples work and expound upon it. He didn't invent the lightbulb- there were a few before him, one was canadian-- and he made it better. He invented the first incadescent light bulb, which could burn for hours- others didn't use a vaccum and they only were good for short periods of time.

He didn't invent electricity either-- it was first talked about in ancient Greece, but he did make it work for us. (there is a whole thing on DC Direct Current vs AC Alternating current, but you can look it up!)

This is the real person to be thankful for. Willis Carrier- the inventor of Air Conditioning!!

The 'Apparatus for Treating Air' (U.S. Pat# 808897) granted in 1906, was the first of several patents awarded to Willis Haviland Carrier.

I truely don't know how people lived in the south without it.

So back to School tomorrow. They cancelled the fall break in October to make up for the missed classes.

And now the mayor and the Governor are telling us to prepare for IKE!! It comes into the Gulf this week.

Here we go again!!
